Do I need a sighting compass?
Im going hiking for the first time and I was wondering if I needed a sighting compass or if a regular baseplate comapss will do fine?
What are the advantages of a sighting mirror.
You should always carry a compass, along with a topographical map of the area you’ll be hiking, and a standard compass is usually sufficient for route finding. But unless you’re specifically going cross-country, or encounter snow-covered trails, or stretches of bare granite without cairns, or some other difficult route finding problem, you probably won’t use your compass to hike most maintained trails and routes in the US in season. You can usually either just follow the signs or figure out the trail to take just from the topo map or a trail map.
