LED and flashlight battery?

What your teacher expects is to say something about the LED lighting up when you have correctly connected the leads to the battery. An LED only lights up when connected in the proper orientation. Unlike an incandescent lamp, reversing the leads will cause the LED not to light up.
Depending on the LED and the voltage of the battery you may “burn out” the LED. A big mistake that some people make is to connect an LED directly to a battery or power supply with no current limiting resistor.
When connected so that the LED lights up, the LED is essentially a dead short across the battery. That will cause a large current to flow through the LED causing it to get very hot and potentially destroy the LED.
To prevent damage to the LED, connect a resistor (~500 or 1000 ohms) in series with LED. This is called a “current limiting” resistor, and it keeps the current from getting large enough to destroy the LED.
So impress you teacher and make sure a current limiting resistor is connected between one lead (it doesn’t make any difference which one) and the battery.
