What to consider before purchasing motherboard + CPU combo?
I want to upgrade my motherboard & CPU. If I purchase a combo MB + CPU, are there any other considerations I must make before my purchase apart from that I have a PC tower case? Once these are changed, won’t all the other internal components just plug into place & work? I am not a gamer, just web browsing & basic stuff.
New mobos usually have only SATA disk connectors, older ones use IDE so your disks may not fit – you can get a SATA – IDE converter, or put your old disk into an extenal USB enclosure. Same problem for optical drives.
You may have a AGP graphics card, new Mobo’s usually have only PCIe so your graphics card might not fit.
New Mobo will use DDR2 or 3 ram, older ram won’t fit.
The new mobo & processor may need more power than your current PSU can support, or an extra 4 pin connector older PSU’s dont have.
A lot depends on the age of your old system.
