‘Golden Compass’ controversy: What do you think? Will you go see the movie to know what’s the fuss all about?
Another fantasy movie, another controversy. When author Philip Pullman’s “The Golden Compass” was released, the first in his “The Dark Materials” series, some Christians and religious groups decried it as blasphemous. So people are watching the release of the $180 million flick closely, seeing if the controversy will hurt its box office or if the themes translate to the big screen.
I haven’t read the books, but here’s what I’ve been reading about the issue: “It’s set on an alternate Earth dominated by the Magisterium, an oppressive religious institution akin to the Catholic Church, whose God is a distant, nebulous deity known as the Authority,” according to Entertainment Weekly who put the controversy on its cover this week.
What do you all think? What’s the fuss about? Will you go see the film this weekend?
from what i have heard, the movie is simply interesting to watch, for the kids and the whole family. Nothing in it directly strikes people’s beliefs. But even if that is the case, the movie was created so that it will draw attention to the books where all the said blasphemy is made.
