What are the similarities and differences between digital GPS and a compass?
Compass bearings are based on magnetic fields. GPS uses satellites (hence global positioning system). Both can display compass headings. GPS can display: distance, rate, time, time enroute.
Compass can only display heading and is subject to error due to magnetic variation (variation in earth’s magnetic field on different parts of the earth that causes changes in compass readings).
Digital GPS is powered electronically, compass requires no power.
