Is there a good drum set that lets you listen through head phones so I don’t bother my neighbors?
I live in an apartment and really want to learn drums on a full drum set….. is there something that plugs in and just makes tapping noises while its plugged in and you can listen on head set?
Electronic kits are perfect for that. Like said before, they cannot duplicate the softer nuances of acoustic drums, but they still are an amazigly effecient way to improve without having to deal with schedule and noise complains.
Although they are marketed as “silent” you still gotta consider that they make some noise, not much but if your place is really badlly insulated it may cause some troubles. On the other hand, always keep in mind that their are 2 different types of noises transmited. Ambiant noise (through the air) and stuctural noises (through floors for example). Your biggest concern as a drummer (or music lover in general) are sturctural noises. Say your neighbor’s watching a movie in his living room and he’s got that big sub woofer on the floor, you don’t really hear what’s happening or what’s being said in the movie, but you can still hear tumbles and rumbles…that’s structural noise.
With an electronic drumkit, the worst thing is the bass drum pedal hitting directly on the head of your neighbors (that “thump” sound being transimited through their ceilling). To avoid complains about that stuff, go to your local sporting goods shop and buy those orange foam hockey practice puck (5 or 6 of ‘em), or at a fabric store and buy cubes of foam (for cussion for example). Lay them on the floor, buy a 4′x8′ plywood, throw it ontop, a little carpet and then set your kit up on top of it all. That will cut down the vibrations being transmited to your floor (their ceilling), and “tadammmm!!” no more troubles.
