The development of the bicycle as we recognise it today coincided with the later Industrial Revolution, populations had moved from the countryside to the cities. The cities were polluted by the industries they worked at so, given the chance, the populace preferred to get away from the city into the countryside, the bicycle offered cheap personal transport, the alternatives, trains or horses, were comparatively expensive. It also coincided with the technologies required to produce pneumatic tyres.
