Can someone recommend a good naphtha backpacking stove?

I think I’d like to purchase a folding base w/ separate fuel bottle, like an MSR Whisperlite or Dragonfly. I’m not an ounce-counter or speed freak, but would like a good compromise between size/weight/stability/price (the base ought to have no problem fitting in a pot set) without sacrificing reliability. Conversely, is there any reason I should purchase a canister stove instead? Thanks!

The old canister vs liquid fuel debate haha I`ll save writing a novel about that. Yes, canisters can be lighter but you may have to carry more than 1 canister, which could get bulky I guess. But canisters usually do not perform well in the cold, since the cans are already pressurized you lose pressure when the temps drop- thus losing performance and efficiency, whereas the liquid fuel stoves you provide the pressure by pumping it, so the liquid fuel will beat the canister in cold temperatures. But if you know you wont be camping in the winter then you may want to consider the canister stoves.

The other thing stopping me from getting a canister stove is the cost of the canisters. At $4-$6 a pop (for about a 100-gram canister) depending on the brand etc it adds up over time. When I can get a gallon container of white gas for that price if not cheaper at a hardware store. Also, once the canister is empty now its just taking up space because you have to carry it out to recycle it.

I actually have the MSR Simmerlite and so far it hasn’t failed me. It`s under a pound (without the fuel), whereas most canister systems come in over a pound. Plus its significantly less expensive. If you have the money for a canister system and end up getting a liquid fuel stove put that extra money you saved towards a titanium cook set. Basic kits aren’t that bad, plus they`re super light and if you get the right sized pot the stove can fit inside of it perfectly. (I keep it in a stuff sack so it doesn’t scratch the inside of the pot) I find that the Whisperlite is a pretty simple design so not much can go wrong with it. Whereas the canister stoves you have to watch for the nozzle getting clogged up if you are not careful and a lot of the time the electronic ignition on those things are the first thing to go. Liquid fuel stoves are also more stable since they are lower to the ground and usually have a wider base, where the canister stoves (although not all of them) you have to balance a smaller sized pot on the fuel canister and stove.

Go to an outdoor store and actually try them out. Tell them you are looking to purchase a stove. Some of them even have gear clinics where they`ll already have a bunch of gear to demonstrate. Check their websites for such events.

If you have any other questions feel free to e-mail me or post them under your question. I`ll be checking back
