I want to install a wood burning stove but don’t want to lose victorian fire surround?
Are there small/miniature options out there? I currently have an electric version of a wood burning stove sitting in front of my victorian fire place. I looked into getting a wood burning stove for this winter which would replace this. However, on investigating it looks like I will have to remove the cast iron victorian fire place, which is not what I had in mind. To get a wood burning stove, there doesn’t appear to be anough room for the flume, or your stove would have to be very small. Is there a way round not losing your cast iron fireplace and sitting a wood burning stove in front? Can you have a flume that comes out the back of the stove and up the chimney for example? I had stupidly assumed that this would be a case of sitting the stove in the fireplace and attaching a flume (obviously by an expert) and did not need to do any DIY, i.e. remove my fireplace which is a focul point in the room as it is. Any options out there?
Sanna; I have what would equate with your type of fire place ~ I imagine? I also have a ‘wood’ stove in front of it. My stove’s one of the most ‘Flash’ ones money can buy. It’s small and exquisitely enamelled. Result is that no one notices the ‘fireplace’ behind it.
Saying that? If ye have the typical, blacked, cast iron type fire place? Ye can get a whole range of blacked, cast iron wood stoves.
What I did is have the open grate area of the fire blocked up and the stoves flue passes through the blocks and out up the chimney. British regulations now, of course, call for ’specialist’ fitted flues and god knows what. Can cost more than a decent stove. But, there it is. Look into ~ and cost ~ all that. (I’m in Eire. We’re still trapped in the Dark Ages, of course ~
~ But, believe me; An ‘Insulated’ flue would still give ye incredibly better peace of mind)
More? Thinking of getting and using a Real stove? Ever done it before? It’s ” Interesting “. Could fast become ” Emotional “! LOL!
Here’s, probably, the best site ye’ll ever read about ‘Wood Stoves’. Spend a week of evenings absorbing what’s said in there. I guarantee ye it’ll be time well spent. Only, don’t try to skim or gloss over the raw truths that may emerge.

Ever want a word with a man who’s been there and is still doing it? Feel free to drop me a line. Could be fun to exchange notes ~ along with photo’s of classic ‘Blow Backs’ . Smoke filled properties. ‘Fuel’ piles. And Chain Saws! I’m sure we could soon be bytching about Chain Saws! LOL!
