How do I use my new Swedish FireSteel?
Greetings, I recently purchased a Swedish Firesteel / Survival Knife from Amazon.com

I have never used Firesteel before and was able to create sparks by sort of cutting at the Firesteel rod with the serated part of the knife, but this method seems a bit dangerous and I was not able to really control where the sparks went. Also other models of Firesteel that do not include a built in knife blade just seem to have a small metal striker, so it must not take as much force as I am using. But when i just scratch at it no sparks are produced. I am sure I am missing something here, advice?
you press down on the rod firmly and rather slowly slide it down toward the tinder. It sounds like you’re doing it too quickly and not maintaining full contact over the length of the stroke. Also try using using the edge of the spine of the knife blade instead of the cutting edge.
