Why is my ball python sighing and whistling?
It’s like ten times a minute, he makes these odd whistling or loud sighing noises. It isn’t repeated whistles, just sometimes. And he crawls around like crazy when I walk in the room. Part of his skin didn’t come off from the last shed, so I don’t know if it has to do with that. I broke his thermometer (whoops :/) so I guestimate that his tank is around 79-82 degrees. He has a heat lamp and heat pad in a 40g tank.
But he slithers around near the front of the cage, like watching me, and occasionally he’ll make the noises. They’re abrupt, and I haven’t seen any mucus in his nose or mouth, but it’s kinda freaky. He tries to get out a lot too, like when I enter the room he crawls around like crazy trying to escape.
Help? He’s about eight months old.
The shed probably isn’t related, but you should try to get the rest off. Put him in a tub with a folded towel, filled up with warm water (make sure to take the water temp so it isn’t too hot! warm to us is boiling to a snake!) just high enough that the snake is almost completely submersed. You should also put a rock or something in so the snake can crawl out of the water if necessary. The towel is so that the snake can crawl through it to dislodge the rest of the shed. Bad sheds are usually caused by low humidity, but I have heard of stress causing a bad shed.
As for the “sighing”, are you sure it isn’t wheezing? Is the snake breathing with its mouth open, or gasping for breath AT ALL? Even if it’s only occasionally, it can be a sign of an RI…
However, RI’s are usually because of high humidity, whereas a bad shed implies the humidity is too low. You definitely need to get him looked at by a vet…
Also, NEVER guess on temps. You’re risking your pet’s life. If you have the heaters on an analog thermostat and the temps are always correct according to the thermometer, then chances are they’re still right, but that’s no excuse. Get a replacement thermometer ASAP.
The activity is probably just a coincidence, but the snake may actually be trying to get away from the heat if the heat pad is too warm. Are you sure it’s only when you walk in the room, or is it constant?
Get the snake to a vet and make sure to mention the activity and the partial shed just in case they have something to do with it.
