What actually does qualify as police equipment?
Police officers need an immense amount of equipment. It doesn’t matter if they are on foot patrol or in a vehicle. The range of items they need is vast. Take your ordinary police patrol officer. They need to carry a firearm, a baton, restraints, a torch, notebook a radio and possibly a mobile phone. Now consider that the list given isn’t exhaustive and you start to get a picture of just how much an officer needs. The range of duties they have to cover means the range of police equipment they need has to cover and match all of the potential situations they may find themselves in.
On a quiet day, an officer may not use all of their police equipment but they still need to carry it with them just in case. An officer just has no way of knowing what exactly each day will bring and they need to be prepared for any eventuality. Naturally if an officer is helping an elderly gentleman with directions to somewhere, he wont need use of his baton or firearm. However when you think that round the next corner he may bump into someone high on drugs who is a danger to themselves or others, then he is likely to need all of his police equipment.
You may be surprised to know that there is no one standard set of police equipment, and what an officer needs to carry will vary from state to state. At a minimum, most officers will need restraints or handcuffs, a baton, and a sidearm. Some officers will carry pepper sprays and tasers as the norm. What they carry will be dependant a lot of the time on their area of patrol, a quiet residential neighborhood will require an officer to carry slightly less defensive items. An officer on patrol in a run down and depressed area will need far more defensive items.
There is a vast range of police equipment and many officers have to carry in excess of 9 kg of equipment with them. That is a lot of extra weight to carry, and imagine chasing after someone whilst wearing all that extra weight. The job our officers do is dangerous and the main thing they need to do is protect themselves as well as Joe public. Much of the police equipment is used in their protection, they need to be able to defend themselves and the baton, sidearm and restraints help with this protection.
Given the weight of the every day police equipment needed, when you consider that some officers will also have on a duty vest and or duty belt to hold all of the equipment.
